At Tropix LLC we are proud of our Haitian grown peppers. Nurtured under the sun they’ve received copious amount of heat, some of which is delivered straight to your mouth as you bite into the pikliz covered griot (with bannann peze of course).

As a spicy food junkie, I’ve always boasted of my ability to resist the heat. From a very young age I could eat whole peppers without flinching which amazed my friends and relatives but also got me some locals concerned because such behavior was mostly associated with those of the Haitian Vodou religion who were possessed by ancestral spirits.
Even if it was mostly done to entertain, I genuinely enjoyed the warm spicy sensation in my mouth and the aroma of our local peppers. In this list I’ll present the top 4 hottest peppers you can find in Haiti.
#1 Scotch Bonnet pepper (100,000- 500,000 Scoville Units)

In first position If you go to any Haitian market, you can be sure that 90% of the peppers available will be scotch bonnet. It is arguably referred to as the hottest pepper in the Caribbean. It is the main ingredient used in pikliz and other spicy Haitian dishes.
#2 Habanero pepper (100,000- 500,000 Scoville Units)

They habanero is in the same family as the Scotch bonnet and used to be known as the hottest pepper in the world. It is small and bulbous, but is mostly mixed in with the scotch bonnets in Haitian markets.
#3 Piri Piri aka Piman Zwazo (50,000- 100,000 Scoville Units)

This is the true “piman zwazo” which is also known as African bird’s eye pepper. It is a relatively small pepper, growing only 0.5 to 0.75 inches in length. Piman zwazo may be small but it’s spiciness can bring most to tears, so be warned.
#4 Thai Chili Pepper (40,000 – 100,000 Scoville Units)

Don’t be fooled by the low Scoville scale of that bad boy. Despite being in 4th position in this list it’s still 15 times hotter than the typical Jalapeno. Many times Haitians mistakenly call it “piman zwazo” but unlike the Piri Piri , the average thai Chili pepper grows to about 1 to 2 inches in length.
